TOPIC: Open Source Ecology global village construct. set

Open Source Ecology global village construct. set 1 year, 2 months ago #16995

The Open Source Ecology group is working to develop a "global village construction set" of open source, inexpensive, easy-to-build machines. I heard about them at the Lifeboat Foundation, although I don't know much else. For those of us interested in independent, self-sustaining communities, this may be of interest.

That is very honourable. I have had the privilege to speak with some OSE people, and they weren't exactly polite towards EOS or what we are doing. What they did was really to build up a strawman (that they think we are "authoritarian" because we have a Board of Directors, and that we are scamming people because we have membership fees, that we are bad because we are "creating an identity" by having an organisation, etc...). I find it very sad that an organisation should engage in that form of name-calling, especially when EOS is never attacking other organisations in that manner.

Experience shows that all of the organisations we have encountered to date, who were very rude to us, consist of people who plan to try something new, unique and independent and feel they have all the necessary resources at their disposal. EOS has a very federative approach, which may appear threatening to those kinds of groups (asin we want to "share" aka "steal their resources").

I suppose the correct approach is to let them, keep our distance, but keep an eye on them to collect data on any meaningful results they produce?

Enrique, sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant experience with them. I suppose the open source community has always had elements of anarchism and libertarianism, that perhaps aren't tolerant of other systems.

My initial thought when hearing about OSE was merely to use their designs to build needed equipment rather than any formal alliance. Inexpensive, yet functional machinery could build independence from the Price system.

I too agree with that approach.

While I do agree that it is helpful... What we really need for the Technate as such to function is more groups involved in production. If inexpensive machinery would help to that end, then let's invest our time into that. For now though it still feels like it's more of a "people" issue than a "technology" issue?

Interesting how these group who want to be "free" also tend to have the most intolerant and dictatorial attitudes.

Yes. Work with those who want to cooperate and keep our distance from those who hold intolerant attitudes.
