Hi,

Political involvement has been discussed many times in the Technate and while the Slovenian EOS group is rather apolitical in it's convictions, here is an interesting development: A "Movement for Sustainable Development" has recently been established here in Slovenia, which plans for political involvement and appears to have substantial public support as such.

It's core team of founders (7) includes many familiar faces from the community of alternatives here in Slovenia, it's president being a prominent human rights activist and one other core team member having closely cooperated with the Slovenian branch of the Zeitgeist movement for some time. According to some information, the entire Slovenian Zeitgeist movement (official members) has taken membership in this sustainability movement, with the justification that it appears to be a necessary step in achieving the results they aim for, and an opportunity that cannot be ignored.

The party's founding documents appear to detail sustainability the way we understand it (sustainability in the environmental, social and economical sense). On the other hand, their stance in some political issues appears to not care much about contradicting decisions made by the experts (in the fields not directly related to the ones they support outright such as ecology; they contradict energetics policy) and may drift into being more about politics than sustainability. However they claim an approach where the political party is simply the institution which carries out the will indicated by the nonprofit nongovernmental organizations.

Amongst the party's more innovative attributes appears to be some sort of "RBE Tax", in which government taxation taxes usage of resources and energy rather than monetary value. Although not exactly legalizing alternative economics, it would make the legal issues related to it's implementation much less threatening.

Opinions?

we have also looked at the idea of a political part. I'm not really sure if it will gain anything but I'm interested to see what will happen.

A good initiative. Sadly, such parties won't gain that much support if there is already an official green party which will suck up that part of the electorate.

There isn't.

I think this is why the 'sustainability' movement needs to put clear water between itself and the greens. Its one reason why i think dropping the word technocracy was a bad idea. Or at least coming up with an appropriate substitute.

Sadly, surface matters more than content in our current world.

Sounds interesting!

They failed to enter the election due to a technical error (they had replaced a female member with a male one which caused them to fail the 50% women quota; which is somewhat hilarious as all the other parties only have token women whom nobody has ever heard of before or since, but nevermind I guess).

They are thus moving on with their activities outside and plan to try again next time.
