TOPIC: vertical farming idea for technate arcologies

vertical farming idea for technate arcologies 5 years, 11 months ago #1660

From the slashdot article here

"The BBC is running a look at the potential for Vertical Farming in the Big Apple, a concept that promises to reduce the environmental impact of farming and increase the efficiency of food production by building multi-story farm complexes in urban areas. The vertical farm is envisioned as a self sustaining complex of greenhouses stacked on top of each other. More details can be found on the project web site."

The vertical farming idea could be integrated with the urbanate architecture of the technate.

A very good idea. I believe that one of the first thing we should erect is a three-floor agricultural building.

We have another topic which is similar.

Here

Nice to see I'm not the only one with this idea! (I actually came to the forums just now to explain it). My idea is slightly different though. I will work on it and give you a more detailed description later.

I am thrilled to hear that.

is it just me or has that topic gone?

Yes, it looks crazy.

Re:vertical farming idea for technate arcologies 5 years, 6 months ago #3941

Yesterday I started conducting a small experiment to see if I could make growing of crops inside of greenhouses more effective. So far its looking good, but nothing has started to really grow yet (the seeds have swollen though, so they are on their way).

Therefore it will take me a while to complete my article (if you could call it that, I cant a better word for it).

Edit: I'm growing peas.

There are some problems with greenhouses which we need to adress as well, amongst them heating costs and environmental impact.

Heating would indeed be a problem during the winter. Atm I cant think of anything to solve it, besides (perhaps) using several cheats of class on the walls to reduce the energy needed. Perhaps by using excess heat from the "power facilities"?

Environmental impact? I always imagined greenhouses would reduce the impact on the environment (needing less space to grow crops, and therefore leaving more space for the natural fauna)

Yes, I agree there, but the question is how carbon dioxide neutral the greenhouses are as well. Some people are - on the basis of global warming - claiming that food transports is environmentally friendlier than for example growing bananas in Sweden.

Hmm... I dont think I understand. Do you know of any articles or videos that I could take a look at?

Re:vertical farming idea for technate arcologies 5 years, 6 months ago #3960

Do they mean due to the heating needed? The environmental requirements of bananas are of course different than those of, for example, apples, so heating would be essential. And heating is not allways environmentally friendly.
